According to the census dating from 1991. The Municipality Mrkonjić Grad had 27.379 inhabitants. According to the preliminary results of the census dating from 2013 there were 18.136 inhabitants on the territory of Mrkonjić Grad.

Agricultural land covers about 54,0% of the total land area. Non-arable land area(pastures) covers about 20 % of the total land area and 80% of the arable land area belongs to individual farmers. The quality of the land, the climate conditions and a well known tradition indicate that Mrkonjic Grad is a cattle-raising and agricultural area.

The first significant traces about the existence of the settlement at the territory of today's Mrkonjic Grad lead to the period of the Roman Empire. One of the most important Roman highways (Salona-Servitium), which used to connect the Adriatic sea with the Sava river and Panonija , stretched through this region (Mliništa-Pecka- Štrbina-Podrašnica-Rogolji-Busija-Jovana voda-Trijebovo-Hanovi-Bočac).

In the territiry of Mrkonjić Grad there are four central elementary schools which include ten other schools that are located in ten different rural areas. Elementary school ''Petar Kočić'' includes three other schools that are located at the villages Majdan , Oćune and Kopljevići. Elementary school ''Ivan Goran Kovačić includes one school at the village Šehovci.

Municipality of Mrkonjic-Grad is located in the South-Western part of the Republic of Srpska, i.e in the Western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Coordinates are: 17º 04' 45'' eastwise and 44º 24' 08'' northwise. Mrkonjic Grad is situated 591 m above sea level and the municipality occupies 675 km² and Mrkonjic Grad comprises 37 populated areas that are divided into twenty two local communuties.
